Fire And Rescue Services In Action At College

Tamworth and Lichfield College Responds Well To āMajor Incidentā
On Wednesday 10th October Tamworth and Lichfield College took part in a mock emergency situation at its Tamworth campus. The College is the first college in Staffordshire to undertake a āMajor Incident Eventā simulation. The day involved a mock up of an incident orchestrated by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The purpose of the exercise was to test the Collegeās disaster recovery plan, and to support Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s own training needs in terms of disaster response. Health and Safety Manger, Barbara Hayward, who helped organise the event said, āIt has been planned and organised with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service to help us ensure that we are doing everything correct. It helps us test whether the College is able to swiftly and safely evacuate its buildings and able to manage people safely and effectively.ā
The simulation started with a total evacuation of the Collegeās buildings, with over 1000 people being led to safety by the Collegeās specially trained fire marshals. The crowd then assembled in selected safety areas and were able to watch Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service in action.
The Fire and Rescue Service had already smoke logged a corridor of the college then completed a search and rescue of student volunteers, from Public Service courses, a rescue of a wheelchair user from a special refuge area and a spectacular roof rescue using a hydraulic lift. Police were also on hand to make sure the area was secure, safe and access for emergency vehicles was available.
Speaking after the event Anne Neville, Principal of the Tamworth and Lichfield College, said she was very pleased how the event passed.
āAt the College student safety is paramount and Iām very happy everything went well,ā she said.
āThe purpose of the exercise was to test our disaster recovery plan, and to support the Fire and Rescue Service’s own training needs in terms of disaster response. We have been warmly praised by senior members of the fire service for the speedy and controlled evacuation of all the buildings, for the high visibility and efficiency of our fire marshals, and for the exemplary behaviour of the students. The fire crews rarely have an opportunity to participate in a training incident where more than one thousand people have to be evacuatedā.
The event lasted for about an hour and half and was agreed to be a successful exercise for all parties concerned.
