Songs Of Praise Films Lichfield School Of Art

Top TV presenter Aled Jones has visited Lichfield School of Art to film segments for the BBC’s ‘Songs of Praise’ programme which was aired on June 3rd, 2007.
This show, which features a service from Lichfield Cathedral, focuses on a range of nativity sculptures made by blind School of Art student Cliff Vawda, and as such, many of the linking elements of the programme were filmed at the School of Art’s buildings in the Friary.
Aled met with staff and was given a whistlestop tour of the college where he was photographed with students before completing segments of the show.
Head of Lichfield School of Art Alison Churchill said, “Aled seemed to enjoy his short stay here in Lichfield and was very complimentary about the college. We were also delighted of course, that Cliff Vawda is to play such an important role in the programme as he is a very well respected student here and is well known to many people who often see him with his wonderful guide dog Caesar.”
Seventy one years old Cliff started a sculpture class five years ago having never tried it before, and very soon proceeded to making a full set of nativity sculptures which are displayed in the cathedral every Christmas. He said, “I am delighted to be involved with the filming for Songs of Praise, particularly as it is taking place here at the School of Art where my interest in sculpture started.”
Lichfield School of Art is part of Tamworth & Lichfield College and at its most recent Ofsted Inspection, was awarded a rare Grade 1 ranking of ‘outstanding’. Cliff, who lives in Lichfield, commented, “I can’t speak highly enough of the School of Art - it’s a really fantastic place.”
