Students Invited To Apply For Technology Scholarship
Technology students joining Tamworth & Lichfield College next year will be able to apply for a scholarship offered by Tamworth company Alcon in support of young automotive engineers.
The John Moore Scholarship provides a full year’s cash support and work experience to a mechanical manufacturing and engineering student who will be chosen on the basis of a special assignment to be completed in the first half term.
Gary Hayward, Head of Technology at the college said, “This is a fabulous opportunity for a young, aspiring engineer to enjoy financial support during their full time course, and during college vacations, experience at first hand the working environment of a world-wide respected engineering company.
“Students are often faced with a dilemma when choosing whether to continue their education or move into the workplace. This scholarship provides financial support along with on-site work experience which will place the successful student in a much more favourable position with prospective employers when they come to look for a job.
“This initiative also illustrates how further education colleges and the commercial sector can work together in partnership, as Alcon is also a member of the Tamworth Manufacturers Training Network and is keen to play a part in ensuring that our training options match the needs of modern industry.”
Alcon has a manufacturing facility on Lichfield Road Industrial Estate and makes components for world class motorsport teams. John Moore, who founded Alcon in 1983, was the designer of the first diaphragm spring competition clutch, which is the basis of competition clutches still in use today.
Alcon Managing Director Alistair Fergusson said, “This scholarship was created when John ended his day to day involvement with the company and took up a consultancy role. The scholarship was in direct recognition of his career and continues to be a positive and appropriate acknowledgement of his contribution to automotive engineering and motorsport.”
